About me
Alex Merryman is an experienced foray leader with the Colorado Mycological Society. Having lived in Colorado for much of his life, he is well-versed in Rocky Mountain fungi, trees, and terrain.
Alex is a contributor to Falcon Guides' "Foraging Mushrooms of the Rocky Mountains," published in 2024. He helped organize a group to advance Agaricus julius (the "Emperor Mushroom") as Colorado’s official state mushroom; it was signed into law in 2025. Alex has been invited to discuss mycology and other topics related to fungi at a variety of forums, including radio programs and speaking engagements. Alex also volunteers at Denver Botanic Gardens as an Advanced Fungal Identification volunteer.
Alex appreciates all fungi, from the tiniest ascomycete to the largest bolete, and is passionate about documenting and protecting biodiversity, foraging and cooking edible mushrooms, ethnomycology (studying how humans interact with mushrooms), and photographing fungi.
